Surveys on State Owned Land

Welcome to the information section about surveys on state owned land.

If you are required to do an As-Built Survey in support of an easement, please read the section below on State As-Built Surveys.

If you are surveying State-owned tidelands, please read the section below on Alaska State Tideland Surveys.

If the State land being surveyed is being leased or patented, then please see below for Alaska State Land Surveys.

State As-Built Surveys

When an improvement is permitted on DNR-controlled State lands or waters an as-built survey and plat of the constructed improvements is generally required. Improvements can include public and private access roads, trails, dikes and levees, outfall and intake lines, above and below-ground utilities, lagoons, pipelines, and others.

The Survey Section of Mining, Land, and Water has a library of applicable survey instructions and samples for the many types of applications. Please contact our staff experts for survey instructions applicable to your project:

Stanley Brown at (907) 269-8521 or Email

    Amy Orange-Posma at (907) 269-8524 or Email

Note: When requesting survey instructions you will need the ADL number assigned to your project, name of the DNR Land Adjudicator who is managing your case, and the name of your Land Surveyor. You are urged to request the instructions as early as possible in your project to make the survey as efficient and cost-effective for you as possible.

Please contact the Coastal & Riparian Boundary Supervisor with any questions.

In the majority of tideland surveys, at least a portion of the survey involves surveying the boundary between the tidelands and the uplands. This involves determining the location of the Mean High Water line. Download the 2002 Survey Conference paper PDF 2002 Survey Conference paper PDF for more information on Alaska Tideland Surveys, including a description of the proper procedure for locating the MHW line.

After the survey, plats must be submitted to the DNR Survey Section for review. Review Fees
